Tradition!!!
The opening scene of “Fiddler On A Roof” always makes me laugh.
Tevie screaming “Tradition!!”. Demanding things must remain the same. It was intended to be a parody, not to be taken seriously, but I think he has a point.
Society evolves.
Clothes that were fashionable 30 years ago are laughable today. Sayings “cool” even 20 years ago seem ridiculous today. Even the style and colors of our homes continues to change. On a personal note, I was never into the whole “gray“ trend. Gray, the color of absolutely nothing.
lol
There are some things that should never change. Keeping God, first place in our homes IS the most important one.
But slowly, we evolve, if we’re not very vigilant and careful. Complacency and apathy take over, like a mouse that comes in every night just to steal one grain of rice pretty soon our spirit or “bag” is empty.
Our society shows it!
How many families today have home altars? How many families today insist their children attend church regularly and learn God’s Word? How many families today keep their celebrations, like Christmas, totally centered on Jesus? How many children hear their parents read the Word of God to them? How many children hear their parents read the Word of God to them regularly? These are all “traditions” we are instructed in the Word of God to do.
If you wonder if you’ve kept God first place (chances are you haven’t, if you’re even asking). It is not hard to tell.
Look back over yesterday, last week, last month and last year. How much time did you devote to the things of God? How much time did you devote to teaching your children about His word? Look at your money. Where did you spend it? Can you see thousands spent on entertainment and luxuries and far, far less spent on the things of God or in training your children?
My pet peeve is Little League sports. Families become so entrenched in them that everything else takes second place. Children are up way past bed times trying to get homework done after practices. Exhausted cranky children don’t do well in school or at home.
I also think there’s a bigger picture. I think it’s teaching children that a hurried lifestyle of putting family or God always behind your current endeavor is OK. I don’t think that’s a good value or “tradition” to pass on.
You are definitely putting something first place. It just may not be what you think. It may not be what you want!
Don’t take this as criticism or even condemnation. Please see this as a reminder to take stock, your children are in desperate need of spiritual foundation, teaching, and DAILY “food” from the Word of God. You are too!
Let your lineage be the one that “holds the line“. Let your grand children be the ones to preach and teach to their generation what they learned from their parents. Let your family be the one to carry on the “traditions“ in God’s Word.
They will be (not only successful, but) leaders in society, their home, and more importantly, the kingdom of God if you do.
